![]() ![]() As the excitement mounted and our son's due date got closer, I was amazed to see how easily I could walk away from my offices after coverage arrangements had been made. ![]() I discovered that I did not qualify for any paid leave from my county position and launched into some creative financial planning to make it all work. We patched together coverage through the generosity of my CAP colleagues. My announcement was met with varying degrees of congratulations, celebration, anxiety, and thinly-veiled resentment. Finally I initiated communication with the department where I was teaching on the volunteer faculty and with the AACAP committees I was serving. Next, discussions with my private practice patients about planning for my upcoming absence. First the announcement to my co-workers, clinic managers, and medical director to prepare for three months leave from my county mental health position. Last year, when my husband and I began our quest to become adoptive parents through domestic open adoption and moved quickly to match with our son's birthmother, it was my turn to negotiate some of the twists and turns I'd seen my colleagues move through. Through my training, I watched babies arrive to a few medical school classmates, covered maternity leave for friends in residency, and watched with great interest as one of my fellow child psychiatry trainees raised her preschooler. Rather than striving to stick to some arbitrary timeline, I have allowed this advice to free me to become a mother when the time was right for me and my family and to craft my career around my personal priorities. Of all of the wisdom that my women mentors have passed on, the caveat "there is no good time to start a family when you're in medicine," has perhaps been the most helpful. I look forward to further exploring your goals as a resident in psychiatry.Becoming a Parent as an Early Career Psychiatrist Whether residents arrive to our program with the ambition to further the field with research, care for underserved community populations, teach other physicians or pursue a successful private practice, they graduate with a strong foundation of expertise in the field. We also offer an educator track dedicated to training academic clinician educators. In addition to an exemplary clinical education, we offer a research track that fosters early development of basic science, clinical and translational research. The remainder of the last year of residency is elective time, ensuring residents can personalize the final phase of training according to specific areas of interest. This allows senior residents to collaborate directly with junior residents and prepares them for a smooth transition into the role of attending psychiatrist. Fourth year residents spend two months of selective time in a junior attending role at the clinical site of their choosing. Our program believes these are key to being an expert psychiatrist. The latter half of the residency experience emphasizes integration of medical and scientific literature with innovative interview techniques and advanced therapeutic skills. We also begin teaching psychotherapy in the second year so that residents may apply their developing techniques as they care for patients throughout training. This allows residents an opportunity to experience diverse aspects of psychiatric practice early in their training. The second year incorporates the many subspecialties of psychiatry including exposure to addiction, adult and child, consultation-liaison, forensic and geriatric psychiatry. Our program emphasizes patient interview experience, differential diagnosis and pharmacologic interventions in the first year. Along the way, we anticipate empowering residents to develop exemplary clinical skills while also maintaining awareness of the importance of self-care and work-life balance. Our mission is for our residents to become experts in the field of psychiatry. As a proud graduate of the IU Psychiatry Residency Program myself, I can personally attest to the high caliber of faculty teaching and the breadth of clinical exposure. Welcome to our Psychiatry Residency Training Program at IU School of Medicine, Indianapolis! I am delighted to learn of your interest in the field of psychiatry and in training at our institution.
